about

Spirit Guide: Early Recordings 1995–2008 is a collection of twenty unreleased outtakes, demos, and sketches from thirteen very formative years.

The oldest tracks on Spirit Guide flash back to 1995 in Louisville, Kentucky, when I was 14 years old and just starting to get into making music. I would sample cassette tapes from my Walkman into the home computer and arrange those samples into notes using a sequencing app, with the little music theory I knew.

I was also tuning into a lot of alternative and classic rock radio which led me to pick up the guitar. My father had an old classical from the USSR and I began playing around with it without really knowing what I was doing. He eventually taught me some chords and later that year got me a cheap electric and practice amp. Before long I was drilling Black Sabbath riffs and recording zany little audio experiments on my cassette deck. I enjoyed exploring the sonic possibilities available to me with the electric.

Toward my late teens, I was beginning to dabble in four-track recording and had put together an eclectic band called Liberation Jumpsuit with some college pals. By the time I moved to Brooklyn in 2003, I was getting deeper into the recording process and found work as a studio runner to see what that world was like. My housemates were also musicians and enthusiastic about collaboration, which spurred me on to record more sketches and demos, which led to Cubicle Puppets, the first Psychic Lines album released in 2008 under the name PJ Glauberzon.

This sonic odyssey is laid out in the twenty tracks on Spirit Guide curated from the hundreds of recordings committed to tape and file in that timespan. Oh and everything is jumbled up to make it a little more interesting. Hope you enjoy the ride! -PJ
